Multi-Generational Travel Trends 2027: What Families Should Plan For Now

There is still time to book a holiday trip this year, whether you want to step away from the same old routine or start a new family tradition. If you are traveling with a larger group, though, now is the time to start thinking about 2027. The biggest multi-generational travel trend for the year ahead is intention. Families are choosing trips built around a reason, such as a milestone, a reunion, or time together, instead of adding another destination to a list. Signature Travel Network's 2026 Agency Intelligence Trend Watch, which draws on a network of more than 300 agencies and 15,000 advisors, points to the same shift. Travelers want more personal trips, earlier access to the experiences that matter, and a trusted advisor to help them choose.

We are Mindy and Suzie Aiken, a mother-daughter travel advisory team with 30 years of client relationships and members of Signature Travel Network. Below are the five trends we think matter most for families planning a multi-generational trip in 2027, and what each one means in practice.

Summary: The five trends shaping multi-generational travel in 2027 are experience-led travel, family-friendly exploration, a split in booking timelines, the growth of river cruising, and the rising value of human expertise as AI expands. The best first step is to decide what the trip is for, then book early for the moments that matter most to your family.

1. Experience-Led Travel Is Replacing Product-Led Travel

Families are moving away from trips defined by a hotel brand or a checklist of sights. They want private cultural encounters, meals with a story, and itineraries built around their own people. Customization has become an expectation for every trip, from a milestone anniversary to a long weekend.

Demand data supports this. Across Signature's network, luxury cruise sales for 2026 departures are up 16% year over year, and 2027 sales are pacing 27% ahead of 2026. Luxury independent travel and guided tours are pacing a combined 23% ahead of last year. Natural events are also driving trips, including cherry blossom season, wildlife migrations, solar eclipses, and the Northern and Southern Lights.

Two destinations we plan often are on the rise. Japan ranked among the network's top international destinations for 2026, and South Korea saw the highest year-over-year growth in air capacity, along with Australia.

What it means for your family: Build the trip around a shared moment. Three generations under cherry blossoms in Kyoto, or a grandparent's milestone birthday in Seoul, gives everyone something to talk about long after the trip ends.

2. Exploration Travel Is Becoming a Family Trip

Exploration travel has grown from a niche into one of the industry's fastest-growing segments. Expedition cruising leads, with sales up 24% year to date compared with 2025. The traveler is changing too. Millennials, Gen Z, and multi-generational families now join seasoned adventurers, and both parents and grandparents are asking for these trips.

Purpose-built lodges in regions such as Patagonia are growing. Signature even launched a travel magazine for children, Ready. Set. Go!, in May 2026, and its first edition sold out.

What it means for your family: Active participation works across ages when the pacing is right. We help build itineraries with different activity levels in the same place, so a teenager, a parent, and a grandparent can each choose their day and meet again for dinner.

3. Multi-Generational Travel Trends 2027: Booking Timelines Are Splitting in Two

Old ideas about peak and shoulder season are breaking down. Advisors now see two opposite behaviors at once.

Booking closer to departure. Many travelers decide just 30 to 90 days out. Demand for fall travel keeps growing, which is turning shoulder season into one of the most sought-after times to travel.

Planning further ahead than ever. Since 2024, the average booking window for luxury and expedition cruises has grown by two to four months. Guided tours are now booked an average of 9.1 months ahead, up from 8.4. Some partners have already released select 2028 and 2029 itineraries.

What it means for your family: Match the booking window to the group. A reunion with a dozen people, a milestone date, or a small-ship voyage benefits from booking a year or more ahead, so everyone gets the rooms and dates they need. A flexible couple heading out in the fall can plan closer in.

4. River Cruising Is Growing and Widening Its Audience

The global river cruise market is valued at roughly $2 billion in 2026 and projected to reach $5 billion by 2035, according to Business Research Insights. Signature's network is growing faster than that pace. International river cruise departures are up 14% for 2026, and 2027 is pacing 17% ahead. U.S. river cruising is up 28% for 2026 departures and pacing 40% ahead for 2027. River cruising now appeals to younger travelers, solo travelers, active travelers, and multi-generational families.

What it means for your family: You unpack once and wake up in a new town each day. Smaller ships and direct access to city centers keep logistics light for grandparents and give teenagers something new to explore at every stop.

5. AI Is Making Human Expertise More Valuable

AI has made travel research faster and wider, and it has also created decision fatigue. Families now weigh not only where to go but whom to trust, how to save time, and how to make sure the trip delivers what they intended.

Our view is that technology can process information but cannot replace judgment, relationships, empathy, or the understanding needed to design a custom trip. That matches how we work. AI is useful for gathering ideas. An advisor who knows your family turns those ideas into a plan, secures hard-to-book reservations, and manages the details that keep three generations comfortable.

Work With Us to Plan Your Multi-Generational Trip

Trends are useful, but your family is not a trend. The right trip starts with what yours is for: a milestone, a reunion, a tradition, or simply time together. From there, we build the plan around the people taking the journey.

When you work with Aiken for a Trip, we:

  • Begin with the purpose of your trip, then choose the destination, pace, and experiences that support it

  • Design itineraries with options for every generation, so grandparents, parents, and kids can each enjoy their day and come back together for dinner

  • Advise on the right booking window, whether that means a year ahead for a group trip or a shorter timeline for a fall gathering

  • Arrange the reservations, private guides, and transportation that are hard to secure on your own

  • Handle every detail so you can focus on being present

If a family gathering, a milestone, or a long-held curiosity is on your mind for 2027, let's plan your trip together. You can also explore our multi-generational travel planning, celebration travel, and destination guides for Japan, South Korea, Portugal, and Slovenia.

Q&A

Question: What are the biggest multi-generational travel trends for 2027?

Short answer: Five stand out: experience-led travel, exploration travel that works for families, booking timelines that split between last-minute and far in advance, rapid growth in river cruising, and a rising need for human expertise as AI expands. Together they point to more intentional, personal family trips.

Question: How far in advance should a multi-generational family book a 2027 trip?

Short answer: For group trips, milestone dates, and cruises, book as early as you can. Luxury and expedition cruise booking windows have grown by two to four months since 2024, and guided tours average 9.1 months ahead. Smaller, flexible trips can still be planned 30 to 90 days out.

Question: Is there still time to book a holiday trip this year?

Short answer: Yes, especially for smaller or flexible groups. Many travelers now book 30 to 90 days before departure, so a holiday trip is still possible. If you are traveling with a large group, start planning for 2027 now so everyone gets the rooms and dates they need.

Question: Is exploration travel realistic for families with grandparents and young children?

Short answer: Yes, with the right pacing. Operators are building family-focused itineraries, including small-ship voyages and guided adventures with options for different activity levels. Expedition cruising sales are up 24% year to date compared with 2025.

Question: Are river cruises a good choice for multi-generational families?

Short answer: Often, yes. You unpack once, the ship is smaller, and city centers are close to the dock. Signature's network reports international river cruise departures up 14% for 2026 and 2027 pacing 17% ahead, with growing interest from multi-generational families.

Question: Is fall still shoulder season for family travel?

Short answer: The label is fading. Demand for fall travel keeps growing, so popular dates now fill earlier. Fall still tends to bring milder crowds and good availability in many destinations, which is why many families like it for a gathering.

Question: Which destinations are trending for multi-generational trips in 2027?

Short answer: Japan, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom were top international destinations for 2026 air travel in Signature's network, and South Korea and Australia saw the highest year-over-year air capacity growth. Japan and South Korea pair well for families who want two cultures in one trip.

Question: Do we still need a travel advisor if we can use AI to plan?S

hort answer: AI helps with research, but it cannot replace judgment, relationships, or knowing what your family needs. An advisor turns options into a plan, secures hard-to-get reservations, and handles logistics so the whole family can be present.
